Two summers ago a group of ‘Sconseters began discussing the idea of creating a ‘Sconset playground. They were inspired by the idea of a public space where children and families could congregate, get to know each other, and engage in playful and healthy outdoor activity. After many months of research and groundwork, there is some exciting news: the Land Bank, which owns the swing set lot across from the public beach in Codfish Park, has approved a preliminary plan for the playground and has authorized the group to begin fundraising. The Sconset Playground and Park Fund has been established through the Community Foundation for Nantucket to further the fund raising, planning, design, purchase, installation, maintenance and care of the ‘Sconset Playground and Park. Julie Jordin of the Garden Design Company has envisioned a plan that will engage children and families in play while instilling respect for the island’s natural landscape, including a butterfly habitat. Fred Martin of Environment Design has drawn on his prior experience working in Nantucket to design a play space in keeping with ‘Sconset’s unique history, architecture and aesthetic. The custom wood design includes not only swings, benches, picnic tables, but a Sankaty Lighthouse, a rope climber and a nautical ship based play structure.
