Members of the Nantucket community have established the Nantucket Food and Shelter Fund in order to help address the most basic needs on our Island.  Contributions received through this fund will be directed to the Nantucket Interfaith Council, specifically to equally support the Food Pantry and the Rental Assistance Programs which are described below. All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowable by law.  We encourage you to give something, give now, give often.

Nantucket Food Pantry

The Nantucket Food Pantry provides essential foods to those who cannot afford to feed themselves and their family. Our goal is to prevent Nantucket residents from going hungry. Many people are shocked to learn that we have served over 10% of the island’s year-round population in the past year. We serve the unemployed, the underemployed, the chronically ill and others whose circumstances have put their daily sustenance at risk.

Nantucket Rental Assistance Program

The Nantucket Rental Assistance Program helps to keep year-round island families housed during periods when they are unable to pay all or a portion of their rent because of unemployment, reduced employment, major illness or injury, or a sudden, unplanned need to move due to unsafe living conditions, sale or foreclosure of their rental units. We help qualified island residents who work in occupations that provide essential services to the island. Our goal is to prevent homelessness of island families who have no option to move off island. In the past year the Rental Assistance Program made short term rental payments on behalf of 52 lower wage, year round families with an average year round residency of 15 years. Payments are made directly to the landlord.

The Nantucket Food Pantry and the Nantucket Rental Assistance Program are both outreach programs of the Nantucket Interfaith Council. Both programs serve our lower wage population, the chronically ill, elders and others whose circumstances have made it extremely difficult or impossible to house and feed themselves and their families. Their stories are poignant and often only confidentially revealed when they recognize they cannot manage alone. We need your help to aid these people.

Private donations are vital for our continued services to Nantucket families. By contributing to the Community Foundation's Food and Shelter Fund, you are reaching out to help fill the most basic of human needs. Thank you!
